SV Equine Therapy LED Light Therapy has been helping horses stay stronger for competition and assist injured horses accelerate the healing process.
Red light therapy, also known as photobiomodulation or low-level laser therapy, is a therapeutic approach that utilizes specific wavelengths of light to target and benefit various health conditions in both humans and animals, including horses. In this technique, particular rays of light are harnessed and directed onto specific areas of the body for therapeutic purposes.
LED light therapy is really a way to help the body heal itself. The lights have specific wavelengths that are absorbed by a photo acceptor, cytochrome c oxidase within the mitochondria of the cell. The energy (photons) from the lights increases the energy within the cell and that speeds up the healing process. The lights must be specific wavelengths and must be delivered at a specific dosage. Using both red and infrared lights is beneficial because the wavelengths are absorbed by different depths of tissue. The SV Equine Therapy LED Light Therapy Pads use two specific wavelengths (Red + Near Infrared LED 660nm/850nm) that research has shown to dramatically increase the rate of healing. The two wavelengths are in the visible red and near infrared spectrums. The visible red is effective for stimulating acupuncture points, releasing trigger points, treating wounds and infections. The infrared wavelength (not visible), which penetrates deeper, has been shown to be effective in helping heal soft tissue injuries, joints and muscles.
The SV Equine Light Therapy Pads have no loose hanging wires that can be easily pulled or ripped out by the horse which is especially important when using the pads on the hoofs or legs. These pads were designed to eliminate accidental ripping of the cords from the pads, despite other pads having a break-away cord. The batteries can also set the device to have different intensities and times.
How Does Red Light Therapy Work?
Red light therapy for horses works by absorbing red light into multiple layers of soft tissue, speeding up the formation of new capillaries. This results in increased circulation and blood flow. It can help speed healing from soft tissue injuries, wounds, or other inflammation causes. Collagen is also increased when using light therapy, which can result in reduced scar tissue buildup during the healing process.
Common horse injuries and issues that can benefit from red light therapy for horses are:
- Arthritis
- Laminitis
- Navicular
- Tendon Injuries
- Bone Bruising
- Splits
- Abscesses
- Muscle Strains and Swelling
- Inflammation
- Sore Backs or Necks
- Wounds, Abrasions, Cuts
Endorphins are also released during light therapy, which can help relax muscles and fight pain. Still, some riders have reported it to have a natural calming effect on their horse, which is especially beneficial before training or competition and for horses on stall-rest for an injury.

We do strongly recommend that you work your way up through the levels as the pads can get hot and the horses tend to feel it more on the legs, knees and hocks. If your horse seems irritable after a period, turn the device off and next time try at a lower lever for a shorter period of time until they accept it, remember EVERY HORSE IS DIFFERENT.
In competitive horses especially, leg and back injuries are common, and healing can be challenging and costly. Prolonged healing and forced rest can cause a ripple effect of physical and psychological problems for the horse that can delay or prevent a return to competition—and veterinary bills can easily run into the thousands of dollars.
The Scientific Stuff
When you see the term “LED therapy,” be sure you understand which wavelengths it’s referring to. Some LED panels, for instance, emit blue and amber light as well as red/NIR. Blue light is very effective at treating some skin conditions, including acne.
Only specific wavelengths (namely red/NIR) have shown therapeutic benefits for deep tissue and wound healing.
Since horses are large and have a relatively thick hide (along with a thick coat), the use of a near-infrared wavelength will be most effective in treating muscle, soft tissue, and joint conditions. That’s because these longer wavelengths have a much deeper absorption rate than shorter-wavelength visible red light.
Red wavelengths and NIR wavelengths penetrate the body's tissues to different depths; for skin-deep healing such as wounds, red wavelengths will stimulate healing. For deeper conditions such as muscle tears or joint pain, go with NIR wavelengths.
After penetrating the skin, red/NIR wavelengths stimulate the production of cellular energy within tiny organelles inside cells known as mitochondria. This sparks a variety of beneficial biological processes, as energized cells can perform their specialized functions faster and more efficiently.
It is the job of the mitochondria to convert raw materials into fuel for cells. But certain conditions, such as inflammation, can interfere with mitochondrial functioning.
This results in mitochondrial dysfunction, which has been shown to be a root cause of many chronic conditions that can interfere with healing and prevent your horse from enjoying optimal health.
The primary effect of red and NIR wavelengths is to reverse and even prevent mitochondrial dysfunction. The ripple effect of energized cells includes faster healing, a stronger immune system, and reduced overall inflammation.
Red light therapy also increases the synthesis of collagen. We typically think of collagen in conjunction with skin health, but it is the most abundant protein in the body. Along with the skin, collagen is found in the bones, tendons, muscles, and ligaments.
Boosting collagen production can help horses heal from injury by rebuilding damaged connective tissue; and if the horse has a skin wound, it will heal more cleanly, with less scarring.
